Buying a used car for sale in united kingdom

Buying a used car: avoiding pitfalls.

At the beginning of this article, it is worth making a small lyrical digression: it is aimed at those who are buying a used car for the first time on their own and is mainly devoted to the consideration of issues related directly to buying a car, and not to the technical side of the issue. We will omit most of the technical issues related to determining the condition of the car and the likelihood that its use will not be associated with constant arrivals at the service station. There is only one reason for this: it is impossible to reliably determine whether the purchased car will be problem-free. A used car is always a lottery, the chances of winning which, however, are very high if you know where and how to buy a car. It is the latter that we will consider in this article.

So, before you start looking for a used car that may become yours in the future, you should honestly and sincerely answer one single question: do you need it? The fact is that many novice car enthusiasts consider buying a car as a kind of investment (“I’ll buy it, I’ll ride for a year, and then I will sell it with the same money and I will not lose anything”). The approach is fundamentally wrong: a personal car is not an investment and in most cases is not a source of income, it is an expense item, and in some cases, it is a very weighty item for the budget. You don't even need to touch on such compulsory expenses as fuel, replacement of consumables, transport tax, and insurance - cars in which nothing breaks down, this is more a deviation from the norm, not the norm. Therefore, periodically you will have to invest in repairs. How large these investments will depend on what kind of car you buy (meaning the brand and model), as well as on its condition at the time of purchase and on how carefully it will be used. That is why, if the main task when buying a car looks like “to drive and sell”, it is better to think several times before starting the epic with the purchase of personal vehicles. If there is a real need for your own car, you can move on to the next point.

What, and most importantly, why will we buy?

Strictly speaking, a car is bought either for city trips, or for trips out of town, or for both at the same time. Let's go in order. Will your car be a typical “city dweller”? Then you should think about the fact that an economical engine and modest dimensions in urban traffic jams are, albeit not the most representative, but the most convenient option. It's easier to park, easier to drive, and you don't have to stop by at a gas station every day to feed your animal.

"To the dalnyak?" If it is assumed that you will be traveling by your car more often between cities than between cities, it is worth looking at medium-sized cars. Babies like Daewoo Matiz on the track are not the safest and most comfortable companions. However, huge jeeps are not needed for the track either - the fuel consumption is too high for the expected mileage. Through the forests, over the mountains? Then you need to look towards the jeeps. Although their fuel consumption is high, and their dimensions are such that in the city traffic, neighbors seem like insects, but the chances of getting bogged down in mud off-road by a jeep are minimal. There are also intermediate, compromise options. For example, crossovers, which were originally conceived as a universal option for any situation. They look, representative, behave remarkably on the track, and they have incomparably more chances of getting out of the road muddy in the rains than a mini-car. It is worth considering who you have to carry in the car. So, for families with small children, sellers unanimously recommend three-door cars. Under no circumstances will a young fidget be able to open the back door on the move - this allows many parents to feel much more confident while driving. For a large family, a station wagon is suitable - as a rule, the saloons of such cars are more spacious, and the voluminous trunk allows you to transport anything your heart desires. If it is assumed that for the most part, the car will carry only its owner, almost any option can be considered.

Where will we buy it?

A used car can be bought from friends, from the hands of the former owner, from dealers or at a car dealership. Buying a car from a friend is perhaps the most convenient option. You don't have to worry that the price will be overpriced or that the car will have problems with documents during registration. On the other hand, no one is immune to troubles. There are plenty of examples when a trouble-free workhorse bought from good friends begins to constantly require repairs. It is clear that this may be due to both the age of the car and the level of driving skills of the new owner, or changes in service. However, the relationship even between the kindest friends in such a situation can be spoiled. Buying a car directly from the hands of the former owner is also quite reliable and convenient. The price may be more attractive than the dealers, and owner-sellers are usually more accommodating, which makes the purchase more convenient. However, there are several subtleties here. First, the seller can offer a sale under a general power of attorney (in this case, the sale is not legally formalized, the seller writes a power of attorney to the buyer and includes it in the insurance policy). Of course, such registration requires less time, effort, and money, but using this method of registering a transaction is at least imprudent. When issuing power of attorney, the car does not undergo a technical inspection, the traffic police do not check its legal purity. This means that the car will remain a "dark horse" for the new owner to the end. In addition, you will have to constantly contact the old owner of the car for the purpose of paying the transport tax. This is inconvenient, to say the least.

Secondly, the seller can offer a “paid” deregistration of the vehicle (in order to speed up the registration procedure). It is impossible to agree to this in any case - the car must necessarily visit the observation deck and completely officially go through the deregistration procedure. Otherwise, the buyer runs the risk of being left in his arms with a car that is incapable of undergoing technical inspection and, accordingly, registering with the traffic police. Usually, this is what the love of repairmen (or the owners of the cars themselves) leads to experiments. Spare part supplied to a foreign car is already a reason not to pass the inspection. Naturally, such "modifications" are found all the time, therefore, in order to be sure of the technical condition of the car, it is important to insist on the full, official removal of the car from the register. Buying a car from dealers is the most unreliable option. Firstly, those who are professionally engaged in the resale of used cars are no less professional and know how to charge them a price, including by masking defects and malfunctions. The chances of buying an adequate car at a price normal for its condition and age are very small. At the same time, buying a car with hands to avoid “outbid”, as motorists call them, is almost impossible - in a number of cities, such sellers practically completely control the vast majority of used car sales. In any case, cooperating with dealers, it is necessary to insist on a complete diagnosis of the car at a good service station, as well as on fully official registration of the purchase and sale. One of the most reliable, but also the most expensive, options are buying a car at a major car dealership. Today, many of them offer quite convenient schemes for purchasing commission cars, and, in cooperation with a large car dealership, you can additionally be sure that the technical condition of the car will correspond to the declared level. At the same time, one should not forget that in car dealerships, first of all, sellers work, for whom it is important to sell a car. That is why, even in a car dealership, you cannot take a used car “without looking”.Here it is worth making one more small digression. Today the concept of "car dealership", especially in the regions, is somewhat vague. Under this guise can be hidden a luxury dealership, and open to all winds parking on the outskirts of the city. The most common, by the way, are the parking lots. As a rule, such a salon is a fenced area with a small booth in which the seller is located. On the territory, there is a product - used cars. It is worth buying something in such "car dealerships" only on the condition that it is possible to assess the condition of the car as accurately as possible. In fact, this is the same purchase from dealers - it is worth being on the alert here.

Medium-sized salons, as a rule, are located in covered hangars and also do not have a very representative appearance. However, the mere fact that cars waiting for buyers are protected from rain and snow speaks in their favor. Such salons can offer loans, and purchase by installments, and registration at their own expense. As a rule, their prices are more or less adequate, and the choice is relatively good. However, there are some exceptions. Therefore, just as in all other cases, it is worth evaluating the behavior of the seller, and the condition of the cars, and the guarantees that the buyer receives. Large car dealerships with commission cars are not yet very willing to work - sellers believe that selling new, rather than used cars, is more profitable. Nevertheless, used cars are gradually appearing in dealerships, although their cost, as mentioned above, in most cases is quite high for the average market level. On the other hand, there are incomparably more guarantees - for those who want to “buy and go”, this option is the most convenient.

Financial question

In almost all cases, the price of the car declared by the seller is not final - the buyer can try to bargain and “throw off” a certain part of the amount. True, bargaining is only appropriate if the car has some "unaccounted for" defects (in most cases it is) that still need to be found. However, in any case (unless, of course, we are talking about buying a car in a major car dealership), it is worth trying. Once an agreement has been reached between the seller and the buyer, the question of the deposit may arise. This topic should be dealt with separately. The amounts involved in buying and selling a car are usually quite large. Therefore, the buyer may not even have the thought that the amount of the deposit does not have to be significant. As a rule, 1-2 thousand rubles are left in their quality, in extreme cases 5 thousand rubles. (if we are talking about buying a rather expensive car or about an urgent sale).

In no case can the amount of the deposit be one fifth, tenth or twentieth of the cost of the car. If the seller asks for exactly this amount, you should think about his honesty - probably, you are either a swindler or a person trying to sell you an outright “illiquid” product.

The deposit must be formalized legally - normally the seller must write a receipt stating that he took a certain amount from the buyer as confirmation of his intention to purchase a car. In this case, the receipt must indicate the passport data of the participants in the transaction, a full description of the subject of the transaction (car), the circumstances of the deposit, as well as what actions the buyer or seller will take if the transaction does not take place. It is worth noting here that the expression "the deposit is not returned" is not always correct. If the seller does not fulfill the terms of the transaction on his part, the buyer has the right to refuse the car and demand the return of the deposit. A written receipt should be registered with a notary so that in case of unfavorable development of events, both the seller and the buyer can defend their rights. Another rather interesting aspect of the "financial topic" when buying a used car is when the buyer does not have enough cash to buy the car he likes. The most logical option in such a situation seems to be a loan. However, the economic crisis that unfolded at the end of last year significantly corrects this logic - it is still quite difficult to get a loan from banks. If we are talking about a small amount (not the full cost of a used car), a consumer loan will be a more convenient option. If the buyer plans to purchase a car entirely with borrowed funds, it is important to take into account that in addition to the cost of obtaining a loan, interest, and the loan itself, such a significant expense will fall on his shoulders as the obligatory registration of a CASCO policy, which costs the more, the older the insured car. In some cases, the cost of CASCO covers all the benefits of a car loan (which, moreover, is quite difficult to obtain). In such a situation, it is easier to navigate the same consumer loan.

Are we going to be registered?

Finally, the last stage of buying a used car is the registration of the purchase and sale. In order to register a transaction, it is necessary to remove the car from the register (drive it to the observation deck in the traffic police, confirm the absence of debt on transport tax and fines with a certificate prepared in advance by the seller in the tax office), draw up a sales contract, register the car again and issue an OSAGO policy.

It should be noted right away that in most cases, the transaction is completed within two days. On the first day - deregistration, execution of the purchase and sale agreement, on the second - registration, obtaining registration plates, and drawing up an insurance policy. At the moment the car is removed from the register, its owner is given transit numbers, which he can use from 5 to 20 days. It is during this period that it is necessary to register the car, obtain new registration plates and take out insurance.
